English Language Education / Emergent Bilingual Program


The English Language Education (ELE) Program (also known as the Emergent Bilingual program) within the Acton-Boxborough Regional School District, is an instructional program based on federal and state guidelines for language-minority populations. By identifying students whose home language is a language other than English, or in addition to English, the ELE Program helps English Learners gain equal access to the American educational system, as mandated by the federal No Child Left Behind Law. In addition to this federal mandate, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has established guidelines to further ensure that these students have equal access to the same educational opportunities as their English speaking peers. (State Law, Section 3 101) Certified teachers focus on helping the students develop proficiency in the areas of listening and reading comprehension, speaking fluency, and writing within the context of mainstream academic topics. Our ELE teachers consult with faculty, staff and parents to ease the transition and provide a specialized learning environment. The ELE Program at ABRSD provides English language services to students and families whose first languages include, among many others, Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, French, Korean, Mandarin, Pashtu, Portuguese, Russian, and Tamil. 

Acton-Boxborough Regional Schools

All elementary schools offer ELE services to English Learners. The program's goal is to develop both social and more complex academic language skills that enable students to perform independently at grade level. Students' needs are met with a combination of in-class support and pull-out, small group sessions. The ELE teachers communicate regularly with classroom teachers to review upcoming curriculum themes and content objectives in order to provide students with structured language development work in the context of those themes. ELE teachers also work closely with elementary Reading Specialists, who co-serve many English Learners in need of developing fundamental and more advanced reading skills in English.

At the Junior and Senior High Schools, our ELE program offers appropriate materials for language learning, cultural awareness, learning strategies and specific content areas. At the Junior High, students meet daily for ELE class, which is specifically developed for their language needs and designed to assist them in reaching their goals in the mainstream curriculum. At the high school, ELE offers an accredited English class and an accredited ELE U.S. History 1 class, both taught daily and designed specifically for students. Assessments are both informal, with a collected portfolio of writing, and formal, with Massachusetts assessments give to all English Learners.
