English Language Education Program

Description

The ABRSD's English Language Education (ELE) Program is an instructional program based on federal and state guidelines for students who do not speak English or whose native language is not English. By identifying students whose home language is a language other than English, or in addition to English, the ELE Program helps English Learners (ELs) gain equal access to the American educational system, as mandated by federal and state laws.

Our certified teachers focus on helping ELs develop proficiency in listening, reading, writing and speaking within the context of mainstream academic topics. Our ELE teachers consult with faculty, staff and parents to ease the transition and provide a specialized learning environment. The ELE Program at ABRSD provides services to students and families whose first languages include dozens of languages other than English.

Our ELE Program

Our program's goal is to develop both social and more complex academic language skills that enable students to perform independently at grade level. Students' needs are met with a combination of in-class support and pull-out, small group sessions. The ELE teachers communicate regularly with classroom teachers to review upcoming curriculum themes and content objectives in order to provide students with structured language development work in the context of those themes.
