Who Do I Contact?

Who Should I Contact?

Find the right person to help with a question or concern. We believe the people closest to a problem are usually best positioned to solve it, so we start there and move outward only when needed.

Our Approach

Most questions are resolved quickly when they go first to the person who works with your child every day. If a concern is not resolved, it can move to the next level. Each step builds on the one before it, so please start at Step 1 whenever possible.

1

Start Close to the Issue

For anything happening in a classroom, contact your child's teacher. For non-classroom concerns, contact your child's school counselor or the school's main office.

2

Move to School Leadership

If the concern is not resolved, contact your school's principal or assistant principal. Building leaders resolve the large majority of concerns.

3

Contact the Central Office

If a concern cannot be resolved at the school, contact the Central Office administrator responsible for that area (listed below).

If a student is in immediate danger, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). To report a safety concern about a student during the school day, call the school's main office right away. You do not need to follow the steps on this page in an emergency.

Who's Who at Your School

Contact information for each of these people is on your school's website or available from the main office.

Classroom Teacher

Your first contact for learning, homework, classroom expectations, and anything happening in class. At the secondary level, contact the teacher of the specific course.

School Counselor

Supports students' social and emotional well-being, peer relationships, and transitions. At RJ Grey and ABRHS, counselors also help with schedules, course selection, and post-secondary planning.

School Psychologist / Adjustment Counselor

Provides additional support for students' mental and behavioral health and works with families and staff on student support plans.

Special Education Coordinator / Team Chair

Your first contact for questions about your child's IEP, services, evaluations, and team meetings.

School Nurse

Contact for health concerns, medications, allergies, illness and injury at school, and health forms.

Principal / Assistant Principal

Responsible for the school as a whole: student conduct, safety, school-wide programs, and concerns that were not resolved with a teacher or counselor.

Central Office Administrators

Central Office administrators oversee district-wide programs and policies. For most concerns, please contact your school first. Some topics, such as enrollment, fees, and Community Education, go directly to the district office.

Central Office is located at 15 Charter Road, Acton, MA 01720. Main phone: 978-264-4700.

The Role of the School Committee

The Acton-Boxborough Regional School Committee sets district policy, approves the budget, and supervises the Superintendent. The Committee does not resolve individual student or staff matters, which are handled by school and district administrators. If you have feedback on district policy or the budget, you may contact the Committee at abrsc@abschools.org or speak during public comment at a School Committee meeting.

Tips for a Productive Conversation

  • Reach out early. Small concerns are easier to resolve before they grow.
  • Email is the best way to start. Please allow up to two school days for a reply.
  • Share specifics: what happened, when, and what you have already tried.
  • Say what outcome would help. It gives everyone a shared goal.
  • If you move to the next step, let the person know who you have already spoken with.
  • Interpretation and translation are available. Ask your school's main office for language support.
